Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico’s Sacramento Mountains are bracing for a winter storm, with heavy snow and gusty winds expected through Saturday evening. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning effective from midnight Friday until 6 PM MDT Saturday.
Snow accumulations in the region are forecasted to range between 5 and 9 inches, with isolated areas potentially receiving higher totals. Winds will gust up to 40 mph, which could lead to hazardous travel conditions, especially along snow-covered roads.
Areas affected include the East Slopes of the Sacramento Mountains below 7,500 feet and the higher elevations above 7,500 feet, impacting cities such as Pinon, Sunspot, and Cloudcroft.
According to the National Weather Service, gusty winds may cause tree branches to fall, posing further risks for travelers and residents. Officials advise those traveling through the region to carry extra supplies, including flashlights, food, and water, in case of emergency. Additionally, travelers should check current road conditions by calling 511 before venturing out.
