Albuquerque, N.M. – High winds are ramping up across New Mexico this weekend, with gusts expected to top 45 mph in parts of the state by Sunday, raising concerns for travel disruptions and wildfire danger through Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph will begin Saturday afternoon, especially east of the Central Mountain Chain, peaking Sunday and again Monday. Red Flag Warnings remain in effect due to critically low humidity and dry vegetation across south-central and eastern regions.
The strongest gusts Sunday—ranging from 40 to 45 mph—are forecast for areas near Las Vegas, Santa Rosa, and Clovis. High-profile vehicles traveling on north-south roads like I-25 and U.S. 285 may encounter hazardous crosswinds. Blowing dust could sharply reduce visibility near Roswell and Ruidoso, where gusts may exceed 38 mph.
Monday brings continued elevated fire weather along and south of I-40 as a cold front drops temperatures but keeps winds active. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and keep vehicles off dry grass.
Red Flag Warnings remain in place through Monday. Winds are expected to ease by Tuesday, but fire danger may linger in drier zones.
