Roswell, N.M. – Drivers in Chaves County are urged to stay alert as powerful winds whip through the region Wednesday, creating dangerous blowing dust and sharply reduced visibility, especially near Roswell.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a High Wind Warning and Blowing Dust Advisory remain in effect for Southwest Chaves County until 8 p.m. MDT. Wind gusts may reach 60 mph, with visibility dropping to as low as a quarter mile, particularly on the Roswell Relief Route and open plains.
In the Chaves County Plains, sustained southwest winds of 30 to 35 mph—with gusts up to 55 mph—are expected to kick up dust and debris, creating hazardous driving conditions and possible power outages. High-profile vehicles, including trucks and RVs, are at elevated risk of tipping or being pushed off course.
Officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor items and avoid travel during peak wind hours. “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” remains the NWS guidance for motorists encountering dust storms.
Both warnings will remain active until 8 p.m., and further advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
