Albuquerque, New Mexico – Drivers along I-25 and Tramway Boulevard could face sudden crosswinds strong enough to push vehicles out of lanes starting by 10 p.m. tonight as canyon winds intensify across central New Mexico.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, gusty east canyon winds will ramp up between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday, with peak gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph below Tijeras Canyon and across the Albuquerque metro. The strongest winds will develop where canyons open into the Rio Grande Valley, including areas stretching from Santa Fe southward.

These winds may create dangerous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles traveling north to south on I-25. Local roads near the Sandia foothills and Tramway Boulevard could also see sudden gusts capable of blowing unsecured objects into roadways.

The wind event is tied to a backdoor cold front pushing west across the state overnight, bringing slightly cooler air into eastern and central New Mexico by Monday. Despite the cooldown, temperatures will quickly rebound, with highs climbing into the upper 80s and low 90s across much of the region by midweek.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture, avoid overnight travel in exposed areas if possible, and remain alert for sudden wind shifts. Gusty conditions will ease after sunrise Monday, but another round of changing weather is expected later this week as additional fronts approach.
