Albuquerque, N.M. – A stretch of dangerous heat will grip central New Mexico Friday as highs climb to near 97 degrees, before a shift to stormier conditions brings relief and new hazards through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the metro will see highs near 100 Friday under full sun, with light winds offering little relief. By Saturday night, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop east of the Sandia Mountains, spreading across Bernalillo and Sandoval counties with gusty winds and lightning possible.

Sunday will stay warm, topping out in the mid-90s, but isolated storms are expected to redevelop by late afternoon. Storm chances grow stronger Sunday night into Monday, with the best opportunity for widespread rainfall across central New Mexico. Forecasters say the risk of downpours and localized flooding will continue into midweek.

Drivers on I-40 and I-25 should be alert for sudden heavy rain, reduced visibility, and ponding on roadways during evening commutes. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat Friday and prepare for shifting weather conditions by keeping phones charged and travel plans flexible.

Storm chances remain in place into Wednesday, with additional advisories possible.
