Albuquerque, NM – Residents face a dangerous wave of heat today as temperatures are expected to reach 102 degrees, creating significant health risks across the Middle Rio Grande Valley. The intense heat prompted officials to issue advisories, urging people to take immediate precautions during the hottest parts of the day. Conditions will make outdoor activities hazardous and put a strain on those without access to adequate cooling.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon until 7 p.m. MDT this evening. The advisory covers the entire Albuquerque metro area, where the extreme temperatures may cause heat-related illnesses. Officials recommend staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, remaining inside air-conditioned rooms, and avoiding direct sun exposure. They also stress the importance of checking on relatives, neighbors, and pets to ensure they are safe.

For those whose work requires them to be outside, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and anyone exhibiting symptoms should receive a 911 call. This persistent heat will challenge vulnerable populations and could impact travel on major roadways like I-25 and I-40.

The heat is not a one-day event. While Monday is the peak, hot and sunny conditions will continue through the week. Tuesday will see a high near 98 degrees. Wednesday follows with a high of 97 degrees. The heat persists for the Juneteenth holiday, with Thursday’s high expected to be near 99 degrees. A slight cooling trend is anticipated for the weekend.
