Albuquerque, N.M. – Residents across central and southeastern New Mexico will face dangerous heat Sunday, with temperatures expected to soar into triple digits across the Rio Grande Valley and Chaves County.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. MDT Sunday for the Middle Rio Grande Valley—including Albuquerque—as well as the Lower Rio Grande and Chaves County Plains, including cities like Roswell and Socorro. Highs are forecast to reach 101° in Albuquerque and up to 105° near Roswell.

The intense heat raises the risk of heat-related illness, particularly for vulnerable populations. Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day. Hydration is critical—officials recommend drinking water frequently and checking on neighbors, especially the elderly.

This advisory marks one of the first significant heat events of the summer for the region. Similar mid-June heat waves have previously triggered emergency room surges and rolling brownouts in high-demand areas.

The advisory expires at 7 p.m. Sunday, but additional alerts could be issued if the heat persists into next week.
