Raton, N.M. – Strong storms are threatening parts of northeastern New Mexico Friday evening as the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 11 p.m.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers Colfax, Harding, Mora, Quay, San Miguel, and Union counties. Forecasters warn that storms may bring damaging winds, hail up to quarter size, and frequent lightning as the system moves east.

Residents in Raton, Clayton, and Tucumcari could see fast-developing cells that reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions on I-25 and U.S. 54. Outdoor activities and high school football games scheduled tonight could be impacted as storms intensify after sunset.

Emergency managers recommend staying indoors when thunder is heard, securing loose outdoor items that could blow away, and avoiding flooded low-water crossings. Power outages are possible in rural areas if winds take down lines.

The thunderstorm watch remains in effect until late tonight, with additional updates possible if the storm line strengthens further.
