Albuquerque, NM –
The National Weather Service is warning New Mexicans to brace for a turbulent weather shift this week, with strong to severe storms today and Wednesday, followed by a sharp drop in temperatures later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a marginal risk of severe storms is in effect through Wednesday for much of central and eastern New Mexico. The greatest storm threat is expected Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., and again Wednesday from 1 p.m. to midnight, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and isolated lightning.

The storm system will move eastward midweek, paving the way for a significant cool-down. By Friday into the weekend, overnight lows will plunge into the 20s and 30s across northern and western areas and into the 30s and 40s farther south and east. The NWS notes a 40–60% chance of the first seasonal freeze for parts of northern and western New Mexico.

Residents are urged to protect pets, plants, and pipes, and to take advantage of the dry period later in the week to prepare homes and yards for winter.

The forecast confidence remains moderate, with cooler, drier air expected to settle in statewide by Sunday.
