Albuquerque, N.M. – Red flag conditions and wildfire smoke are turning Wednesday into a high-alert day across central New Mexico, with wind gusts up to 50 mph and unhealthy air blanketing the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday due to strong winds and relative humidity as low as 13%. This warning includes the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, as well as the Middle Rio Grande Valley. A separate air quality alert is also active, as smoke from the Greer Wildfire in eastern Arizona drifts eastward, degrading visibility and endangering those with respiratory issues.
Winds from the southwest are expected to shift northwest by Wednesday evening, pushing smoke toward Albuquerque, Acoma Pueblo, El Morro, and surrounding communities. Drivers along I-40 and I-25 should expect sudden low visibility in smoke-prone areas.
Fire crews are on high alert due to the increased chance of fast-spreading wildfires. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, limit physical activity, and stay indoors if they experience breathing difficulty.
Looking ahead to Thursday, calm and sunny weather will return with a high near 79°F. Friday brings another mild, clear day near 81°F. Sprinkles are possible Friday night, with highs in the low 80s continuing through Saturday. Sunday could see a breezy return, with highs dipping slightly into the upper 70s.
