Raton, New Mexico – Drivers traveling across northeastern New Mexico could face dangerous road conditions late Thursday night into Friday as a winter storm targets higher terrain and major travel corridors, including Raton Pass.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Johnson and Bartlett Mesas, including Raton Pass, and all of Union County from late Thursday night through Friday evening. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are possible across much of the region, with higher totals of 4 to 6 inches likely on Raton Pass. Wind gusts up to 40 mph could lead to areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
The most significant impacts are expected along Interstate 25, where slick pavement, drifting snow, and sudden visibility drops could make travel very difficult, especially during the Friday morning commute. Strong winds may briefly produce near whiteout conditions on exposed stretches of roadway, increasing the risk of accidents and delays.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm. Commercial drivers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions on mountain passes. Officials warn that the storm system could strengthen, and additional advisories or upgrades may be issued as confidence increases. Travelers should continue to monitor updates through Friday.
