Santa Fe, New Mexico – Snow is coating the Northern Sangre de Cristo and Tusas Mountains early Monday, creating snow-packed and icy stretches that could slow morning travel, especially near Chama and along U.S. Highway 64.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m., with 2 to 5 inches expected and isolated totals near 8 inches above 9,500 feet. The combination of overnight accumulation and colder temperatures has left several mountain corridors slick before sunrise.

Drivers heading through high-elevation areas toward Chama, Tres Piedras, and the Brazos region may encounter reduced traction and limited visibility. The steep, winding sections of U.S. 64 are seeing the greatest impacts, with snow compacting quickly in shaded areas and on exposed ridgelines.

State transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and watch for icy patches where drifting snow may have covered earlier tire tracks. Crews are out treating priority routes, but full improvement may not arrive until daylight and warming temperatures.

Travel hazards should ease later this morning as snowfall diminishes. The advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Monday.
