Albuquerque, NM – Dangerous winds and critical fire weather will hit much of New Mexico Tuesday, with alerts lasting until 9 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued both a High Wind Watch and Red Flag Warning for Albuquerque and surrounding areas beginning Tuesday afternoon. Wind gusts may reach 65 mph, especially along Interstate 40, raising fire risks and reducing visibility with blowing dust. Travel for high-profile vehicles will be hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the Red Flag Warning covers the Northeast Plains, Central Highlands, and Rio Grande Valley. Winds will surge west to southwest at 30 to 40 mph, with humidity levels plummeting to 10 to 15 percent. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to secure loose objects and prepare for possible power outages.

Blowing dust may lower visibility to less than half a mile in some regions. The worst conditions are expected Tuesday afternoon through early evening. Local fire officials remain on standby for rapid response. Drivers along I-40, particularly near the East Central Plains, should proceed with caution.
