Cloudcroft, New Mexico – Travel across the Sacramento Mountains could turn hazardous beginning Friday morning as a winter storm brings the potential for accumulating snow through Sunday, especially at higher elevations where impacts are expected to be more severe.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday morning through Sunday morning for the Sacramento Mountains. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible below 7,500 feet, while areas above that elevation could see 6 to 12 inches if colder air arrives sooner rather than later.

Higher-elevation communities such as Cloudcroft, Sunspot, Timberon, and Apache Summit are most likely to see prolonged snowfall, while locations like Mescalero, Mayhill, and Mountain Park could also experience snow-covered roads. Forecasters caution that snow levels may initially remain above 9,000 feet early in the event, which could limit totals at lower elevations before colder air settles in.

Roads, bridges, and mountain passes are expected to become slick and hazardous during periods of heavier snow, increasing the risk of accidents and travel delays. Drivers heading into the mountains should prepare for rapidly changing conditions and carry winter emergency supplies.

Residents and visitors are urged to monitor updates closely, as timing and snowfall totals may change. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued as confidence increases, and hazardous travel conditions may persist into early Sunday before gradual improvement.
