Albuquerque, NM – A widespread hard freeze is expected to grip New Mexico through Saturday night, with temperatures dipping below 28°F across much of the state. Residents are urged to protect plants, pipes, and pets as subfreezing temperatures threaten various regions.

According to the National Weather Service, New Mexico’s temperatures will be well below average today, with highs ranging from 15°F to 40°F cooler than usual. Mountainous and northern areas, such as the Raton Pass and the northern mountains, are expected to experience significant snowfall accumulation, potentially up to 24 inches in some areas. Lower elevations will face a mix of rain and snow, particularly in the southeast and western regions.

In addition to snow, gusty north winds will exacerbate travel conditions, causing blowing snow and poor visibility, especially in eastern New Mexico. The NWS also warns that heavy snow, combined with wind, may cause tree branches to break, creating hazardous conditions.

The hard freeze expected Saturday night will bring temperatures as low as 14°F in some places, including Albuquerque, Gallup, and Santa Fe. Travelers are advised to drive with caution, and locals should ensure proper winterization of their homes.

For ongoing updates and winter weather alerts, residents are encouraged to monitor local advisories.
