Albuquerque, N.M. – Thunderstorms building over New Mexico’s mountain regions this weekend are expected to bring a heightened risk of flash flooding, particularly over the Ruidoso burn scars, where slow-moving cells could drop up to an inch of rain by Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, marginal to moderate flood risks will persist statewide through Sunday, June 29. Flash flood conditions are most likely between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, with burn scar areas like Ruidoso facing moderate impacts due to poor drainage and saturated soils.

Heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and gusty winds will accompany these storms. Santa Fe, Roswell, and Tucumcari could see minor flooding and brief travel delays, especially on roads near low-water crossings. Outdoor activities in mountainous areas should be reconsidered due to lightning hazards.

Looking ahead, a wetter pattern will take hold starting Monday, with Albuquerque, Ruidoso, and Santa Fe seeing rain chances climb above 50% by midweek. This uptick in activity also increases the threat of flooding near recent wildfire zones.

Residents should monitor alerts and avoid flooded roadways. Flash flood watches and weather updates will remain in effect through July 5.
