ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A burst of Fall thunderstorms is expected to close out the Columbus Day holiday, with showers and gusty winds likely through Tuesday morning across the Albuquerque metro. The National Weather Service warns that wet roads, especially along I-40 and I-25, could slow early commutes as cooler air filters in behind the system.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, scattered thunderstorms will develop late Monday and persist into early Tuesday, bringing brief downpours, lightning, and gusts near 25 mph. While widespread flooding isn’t expected, localized ponding is possible in low-lying areas and intersections. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and avoid crossing flooded washes.

The shift marks a quick cooldown after a warm, mostly sunny weekend. Temperatures will fall back into the lower 70s by Tuesday, with highs near 79°F returning midweek. Southwest winds around 10 to 20 mph will gradually ease by Wednesday.

By late week, conditions turn comfortably dry and mild—perfect for outdoor activities, pumpkin patch visits, and fall leaf viewing in the Sandia foothills. Clear skies and seasonal highs near the mid-70s are expected through Saturday, with crisp mornings in the upper 40s.

Residents should prepare for changing conditions, secure outdoor decorations before winds pick up, and check local updates for any late-day thunderstorm developments as the system moves east.
