ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Fall warmth gives way to scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds across central New Mexico this weekend, threatening travel and outdoor events from Saturday afternoon through Columbus Day. Storm cells may bring heavy rain, small hail, and lightning along the I-40 and I-25 corridors.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, isolated storms begin late Saturday, becoming more widespread Sunday into Monday. Rainfall totals could exceed a half-inch in localized areas, with slick roads likely during the evening commute. South winds up to 15 mph may increase hazard risks for drivers on exposed stretches of I-40.

Residents planning to attend balloon events, farmers markets, or fall festivals should prepare for sudden weather changes. Officials recommend keeping phones charged, avoiding flooded intersections, and delaying mountain travel during thunderstorm activity. Power interruptions are possible if lightning strikes dry terrain or power lines.

Temperatures stay seasonably mild, with highs near 78°F Saturday before dropping into the upper 60s by Monday. Cooler air behind the storm system signals the first hints of late-October chill next week. Tuesday brings a mix of sun and lingering showers before skies clear midweek—ideal for post-storm cleanup or early Halloween decorating.

By late Wednesday, sunshine and highs near 70°F return, closing out a damp but classic fall stretch across central New Mexico.
