Deming, New Mexico – Bitter cold conditions are set to grip far southwest New Mexico starting late tonight, bringing dangerously low wind chills that could pose a serious risk to anyone exposed outdoors through early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from late tonight through Monday morning for the Bootheel region, the Lower Gila River Valley, and the Mimbres Basin. Wind chills are expected to fall into the 10 to 15 degree range, cold enough to cause frostbite or hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.

The advisory includes Deming, Lordsburg, Columbus, Animas, Virden, Red Rock, Hachita, and Antelope Wells. Overnight and early morning hours will be the coldest, especially in open desert areas where winds will enhance the chill. Outdoor workers, travelers, and those without adequate heating are especially vulnerable during this prolonged cold stretch.

Residents are urged to wear layers, including hats and gloves, and limit time outdoors whenever possible. Pets should be brought indoors, and livestock owners should ensure animals have adequate shelter and access to unfrozen water. Drivers traveling overnight should be prepared for cold-related vehicle issues and carry emergency supplies.

The cold advisory remains in effect through early Monday, with temperatures expected to gradually rebound later in the day. Officials advise monitoring updates in case advisories are extended or upgraded as conditions persist.
