Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico residents should prepare for a dramatic shift in weather this week, as a late-season winter storm is expected to deliver heavy snowfall, significant drops in temperature, and elevated fire weather conditions in the days ahead.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, strong southwest winds and low humidity will create elevated fire danger across northeastern New Mexico on Thursday. Wind gusts could peak at 36 mph in Clayton and up to 31 mph in Las Vegas, with relative humidity plummeting to 12%–15% in many counties, increasing wildfire risks.

By Friday into Saturday, a potent winter storm system will sweep across the region. Forecasters expect several inches of snowfall, especially in the Northern Mountains, with areas like Taos and Santa Fe potentially seeing 6 inches or more. Accumulating snow is also likely for Albuquerque and Socorro, although totals may be slightly overstated due to localized wind effects. Lower elevations could see a rain-snow mix.

Saturday will bring an abrupt temperature plunge, with high temperatures forecasted to be 15 to 35 degrees below seasonal averages. Cities such as Santa Rosa and Tucumcari may struggle to reach highs above the mid-30s, a stark contrast to early spring norms. For instance, Clines Corners is expected to reach just 32°F—27 degrees below normal.

Precipitation totals are expected to vary, with most areas forecasted to receive between 0.25 to 0.75 inches of liquid equivalent. Some of this will fall as snow, particularly in higher elevations, further supporting spring snowpack.

Residents are urged to monitor forecasts, limit outdoor burning, and prepare for wintry travel conditions across northern and central New Mexico through Saturday.
