Albuquerque, New Mexico – Breezy to windy conditions combined with rain chances are expected to impact travel and outdoor plans across parts of New Mexico heading into the New Year.

According to the National Weather Service Albuquerque, winds will increase Thursday and Friday, with peak gusts ranging from 30 to over 40 mph, especially across eastern New Mexico. Forecasters warned that gusty conditions may create difficult driving conditions for high-profile vehicles, including along major highways.

At the same time, a warming trend is underway. High temperatures across much of northern and central New Mexico are forecast to climb into the mid-50s to low 60s, remaining above seasonal averages through early next week.

Rain chances increase on New Year’s Day, beginning early in western New Mexico and spreading east toward the Rio Grande Valley. Forecast precipitation probabilities range from 30 to over 60 percent in western and northwestern areas, including Farmington, Gallup, and surrounding communities.

The National Weather Service said rain will be the dominant precipitation type, though mountain peaks above 10,000 feet could see light snow accumulation. A second round of scattered showers is expected late New Year’s Day into Friday, with lower precipitation chances generally ranging from 10 to 40 percent.

Despite limited snowfall, the combination of gusty winds and wet roadways may create localized travel concerns, particularly for commuters and holiday travelers.

Temperatures are expected to remain mild into the weekend, with daytime highs continuing in the upper 50s to upper 60s for many lower elevations before gradually cooling early next week.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions as weather conditions evolve.
