Albuquerque, N.M. – Heavy afternoon thunderstorms are expected to sweep across central, western, and northern New Mexico through Tuesday, bringing threats of flash flooding, strong winds, and lightning to several communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, storm chances will peak Monday and Tuesday afternoons, with coverage favoring late-day hours. Rain rates may exceed 1 inch per hour in stronger cells, especially in burn scar areas where flash flooding is more likely.

Cities including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Ruidoso, Gallup, and Grants are in the zone of highest concern. Ruidoso could see a 70% chance of storms Monday afternoon, while Albuquerque holds at 50%. Local impacts include downburst wind gusts, small hail, and cloud-to-ground lightning. Dry arroyos could quickly fill with water, and saturated soils may increase runoff hazards.

Drivers should avoid low-water crossings and keep phones charged in case of power outages. Loose outdoor items may be blown about in gusty winds.

This is the start of a multi-day pattern. Isolated storms may linger through Thursday in some areas. The National Weather Service will issue additional alerts as needed.
