Albuquerque, N.M. – Sunshine dominates the first half of the week in central New Mexico, but storm clouds are set to return by midweek. Drivers along I-25 and I-40 should prepare for hot, dry commutes Monday and Tuesday before thunderstorms begin pushing into the metro Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, highs will reach 90°F Sunday and rise to 91°F both Monday and Tuesday under clear skies. Winds remain light, with no immediate weather hazards. By Wednesday, a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms moves in, with stronger storms possible Thursday and Friday.

The NOAA long-range precipitation outlook places New Mexico near-normal through mid-September. That means rainfall will be limited in coverage, but storms that do develop could drop locally heavy downpours across the Rio Grande Valley.

Travel impacts may emerge midweek as storms bring brief flooding on city streets and reduced visibility along I-25 and I-40 during evening commutes. Outdoor events and activities in the Sandia foothills and surrounding high terrain should also plan for possible lightning risks later in the week.

For now, Albuquerque will enjoy a dry, hot stretch through Tuesday before the familiar monsoon pattern tries to reassert itself. More updates will be issued if thunderstorms trend stronger or more widespread.
