Albuquerque, NM – Dangerous wind conditions are expected to sweep across much of New Mexico Tuesday, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph and widespread travel disruptions likely.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a High Wind Watch remains in effect from Tuesday morning through 9 p.m. for nearly the entire state. Affected areas include the Albuquerque Metro, Santa Fe, Chaves County Plains, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and eastward into Union and Curry counties.

Forecasters warn that sustained winds between 30 to 45 mph, coupled with stronger gusts, could down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible, and travel will be hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways such as Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 285.

Due to extreme drought conditions, forecasters say blowing dust may reduce visibility to under half a mile, particularly in the Estancia Valley, Quay County, and the Upper Tularosa Valley.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor updates from local officials. Drivers are urged to use caution and plan for rapidly changing visibility and dangerous crosswinds, especially in open areas and mountain passes.
