Santa Fe, New Mexico – Drivers crossing mountain passes in northern and central New Mexico could face sudden whiteouts and crosswinds by Tuesday morning as wind gusts climb toward 60 mph through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a High Wind Watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening for the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Central Highlands, South Central Mountains and parts of eastern New Mexico, including Guadalupe County, eastern Lincoln County and southwest Chaves County. West winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, with gusts up to 60 mph possible.
In the Sangre de Cristo range, a few inches of snow may fall while strong winds create blowing snow and sharp visibility drops near passes and higher elevations. Communities near Las Vegas, Ruidoso and surrounding mountain corridors could see hazardous travel conditions. East of the central mountain chain, including areas near Santa Rosa and Fort Sumner, patchy blowing dust may lower visibility and affect air quality.
High-profile vehicles should avoid exposed roadways during peak wind hours. Secure outdoor objects and prepare for isolated power outages. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as wind speeds become more certain ahead of Tuesday evening.
