Albuquerque, New Mexico – Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph will sweep across central and eastern New Mexico by 9 a.m. Friday, creating dangerous crosswinds on major highways through late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a High Wind Warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday for the Central Highlands and Guadalupe County, where west winds of 35 to 45 mph will gust as high as 60 mph. A Wind Advisory covers surrounding areas including the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, Estancia Valley, Glorieta Pass, Curry County, Roosevelt County and Harding County, where gusts could reach 55 mph.

High-profile vehicles traveling north to south on U.S. 285 and other exposed roadways may face difficult to dangerous driving conditions. Blowing dust is possible in open areas, briefly reducing visibility. Tree limbs could snap, and isolated power outages may occur if lines are damaged.

Residents should secure trash cans, lawn furniture and other loose outdoor items before Friday morning. Drivers are urged to delay unnecessary travel during peak wind speeds and use extreme caution if travel is required.

The strongest winds are expected between late morning and mid-afternoon Friday. Additional advisories could be issued if wind speeds trend higher.
