Chama, New Mexico – Snow will rapidly intensify across the Tusas Mountains late tonight, with travel becoming very difficult to impossible before sunrise Friday as winds gust to 45 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 11 p.m. and continues through 5 p.m. Friday for the Tusas Mountains, including Chama. Snow totals between 3 and 6 inches are expected below 8,500 feet, while higher peaks and west-facing slopes could see up to 11 inches. Gusty winds will create blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

Drivers along U.S. 64 near Chama and mountain routes approaching the Colorado border may encounter snow-packed pavement and drifting, especially in exposed areas. Higher elevations could see brief whiteout conditions overnight into Friday morning. Downed tree branches are possible where heavy snow combines with strong wind gusts.

Officials urge motorists to check nmroads.com or dial 511 before traveling. If travel cannot be postponed, carry emergency supplies and allow extra time.

Snow will continue through Friday afternoon before tapering toward early evening. Additional advisories could follow if snowfall rates increase or visibility drops further.
