Santa Rosa, N.M. – Residents across eastern New Mexico should prepare for damaging winds and large hail as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 1 a.m. CDT Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch—designated as Severe Thunderstorm Watch 326—includes Colfax, Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Harding, Mora, Quay, Roosevelt, San Miguel, and Union counties. The threat zone stretches from the Texas border to the northeastern high plains, with storms expected to intensify through the late evening.

Gusts could reach up to 70 mph, and hailstones may exceed an inch in diameter, especially near Clovis, Tucumcari, and Clayton. Local emergency managers advise residents to secure loose outdoor items, remain indoors during lightning activity, and avoid travel if visibility drops or roads flood.

Highway corridors including U.S. 54, U.S. 60, and I-40 may see brief closures or hazardous driving due to wind-driven debris or downed power lines. Power outages are possible, particularly in rural stretches where vegetation is dry and storm activity could spark isolated fire risk.

Storms may continue past midnight, and additional warnings or watches could be issued if conditions persist or worsen.
