Albuquerque, N.M. – Large hail, damaging winds, and intense afternoon storms are expected across eastern New Mexico beginning Sunday and continuing through Monday, with localized flash flooding possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the most significant threats will occur Sunday afternoon into evening, when severe storms are likely across cities like Clovis, Tucumcari, and Las Vegas. Precipitation chances exceed 70% across much of the region, with strong storms also expected near Clayton and Raton. A critical fire weather threat is also in place for southwestern counties including Socorro and Hidalgo due to dry and gusty conditions.
Storms will continue Monday across the eastern plains and expand into northern New Mexico. Areas such as Santa Rosa, Roy, and Chama could see multiple rounds of lightning, erratic winds, and heavy rainfall. Albuquerque and central valley areas face a lower chance of rain but increasing fire weather risk as dry air pushes northeast.
Rainfall totals could reach 1.5 inches in eastern New Mexico through Thursday, increasing the chance of flooding in low-lying areas, dry arroyo crossings, and unpaved roads. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during storms, and prepare for brief power outages.
Storm activity is expected to taper off by midweek, but additional watches or warnings may be issued as confidence in the extended forecast improves.
