New Mexico – Severe thunderstorms and flash floods are expected to impact northern New Mexico on Friday, with another active day of monsoon-driven weather anticipated. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flood Watch for northeastern parts of the state, where slow-moving storms could bring heavy rainfall, hail, gusty winds, and potentially severe weather conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the most significant storm activity is expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. MDT, primarily affecting east-central New Mexico. Areas such as Farmington, Santa Fe, and Tucumcari have a higher risk of severe weather, with precipitation chances ranging from 60% to 85%. These storms could produce locally heavy downpours with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Flash floods can occur with little warning, especially in regions recently affected by wildfires, where burn scars can exacerbate flooding. The forecast calls for a continuation of stormy weather into the weekend, with temperatures remaining in the low 90s across the state.
