Roswell, NM – A Roswell man is hospitalized and facing multiple charges after an officer-involved shooting Saturday morning, according to the New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

State Police reported that on September 16, 2025, at approximately 8:09 a.m., Roswell Police responded to a 911 call about a possible domestic disturbance outside an Allsup’s convenience store on North Main Street. Witnesses told dispatchers the man was allegedly being aggressive toward a woman and had displayed a black handgun before tucking it into his shorts.

According to NMSP, officers arrived and located the suspect crouched behind a dumpster. When approached, the man fled on foot. During the chase, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers. Police say the officer then fired at least one shot from his duty weapon, striking the suspect.

The man, identified as 27-year-old Andrew Nathaniel Lopez-Cobos, was taken into custody and later airlifted to a Texas hospital for medical treatment. Authorities said Lopez-Cobos has a history of threatening law enforcement and more than 20 prior arrests.

Lopez-Cobos is facing multiple charges, including:

  • Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Against a Peace Officer
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
  • Resisting/Evading
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Negligent Use of a Firearm

The officer’s name has not been released. NMSP emphasized that its role is to investigate and gather facts, while the final determination on the use of force will be made by the district attorney.
