Albuquerque, NM – A potent spring storm will sweep across central and northern New Mexico beginning Friday afternoon, bringing a dangerous mix of rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, precipitation will begin as rain Friday before a cold front pushes south, turning it into snow overnight. The heaviest snowfall is expected from late Friday into Saturday evening, with totals reaching 6 to 12 inches in the Northern Mountains and 1 to 4 inches in Albuquerque and surrounding high terrain. Blowing snow and gusty winds could reduce visibility, especially along I-40 and I-25.
Travelers should avoid mountain passes late Friday through Saturday due to slick roads and sudden whiteouts. Wind chill temperatures will drop into the 20s Saturday afternoon in eastern New Mexico and into the 30s elsewhere. Highs on Saturday will remain 15 to 35 degrees below seasonal norms.
Snow showers will taper off Saturday night, leaving behind a cold but clearing Sunday. Sunshine returns Sunday through Tuesday with temperatures rising gradually—Sunday’s high near 61°F, Monday around 70°F, and Tuesday reaching the mid-70s. By Wednesday, highs may hit the low 80s, ushering in a true spring warm-up.
Residents are urged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and avoid unnecessary travel during snowburst periods. Prepare vehicles with emergency kits and ensure pets are kept warm through the weekend freeze.
Stay tuned for real-time alerts and use extreme caution on roadways during this late-season winter event.
