Albuquerque, New Mexico – Smoke from Arizona’s Greer Fire has triggered an Air Quality Alert across much of central and southwestern New Mexico, with unhealthy conditions expected to persist through 10 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the smoke plume has spread into Catron, Cibola, Valencia, and Bernalillo counties, significantly lowering air quality across the Albuquerque metro area. The advisory warns that sensitive groups—including children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions—may experience health effects and should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure overnight.
The alert follows the continued spread of smoke from the wildfire burning in eastern Arizona, with visible haze and reduced visibility reported on portions of I-40 and NM-117. Residents are urged to monitor local conditions using the 5-3-1 visibility method and to stay indoors if smoke is visible less than five miles away.
Air quality may improve by mid-morning Wednesday, but further advisories are possible if smoke remains over the region. For real-time updates, visit https://nmtracking.doh.nm.gov/environment/air/FireAndSmoke.html.
