Albuquerque, N.M. – Severe storms are expected to develop across central and eastern New Mexico this afternoon, with the greatest threat between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday. Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary hazards, and areas near recent burn scars in Ruidoso face a heightened risk for flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, storms will form along and east of the central mountain chain, moving slowly enough to drop 1–2 inches of rain per hour in some locations. This heavy rainfall, combined with saturated soils in burn scar zones, could trigger destructive debris flows, particularly in the South Central Mountains.

Communities including Ruidoso, Clines Corners, Roswell, and Tucumcari should prepare for sudden changes in conditions. Drivers are urged to avoid low-water crossings and remain alert for rapidly rising creeks and arroyos. Those in hail-prone areas should shelter vehicles, and residents should secure loose outdoor items ahead of strong wind gusts.

The storm threat is expected to diminish by late evening, but additional advisories may be issued if storms redevelop overnight.
