Albuquerque, N.M. – Major heat risks are expected across central and southern New Mexico through 8 p.m. Friday, with areas like Roswell, Socorro, and Carrizozo facing the greatest threat of heat-related illness.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a prolonged stretch of hazardous heat will impact much of the state Thursday and Friday, especially between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. each day. Valley regions in central and western New Mexico, including Albuquerque, are under a major heat risk Thursday, shifting further south on Friday.

Communities such as Truth or Consequences, Las Cruces, and Deming will see continued extreme temperatures, with highs near or above 100°F. The most vulnerable—including those without reliable cooling or hydration—face increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Health systems and heat-sensitive industries may also feel the strain.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and stay hydrated. Cooling centers and shaded areas are recommended for those without air conditioning.

The hazardous heat is expected to persist through Friday evening. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen or expand. For updated safety guidance, visit weather.gov/abq.
