Ruidoso, N.M. – Heavy afternoon storms threaten flash flooding in Ruidoso and across New Mexico’s South Central Mountains through 8 p.m. Tuesday, prompting a renewed flood watch for burn scar zones and low-lying communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, deep moisture in the atmosphere is fueling another round of scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms from midday through sunset. Areas with saturated soils or recent wildfire damage, especially near creeks and streams, face the greatest risk for sudden flooding and debris flows. Urban neighborhoods and low-water crossings are also vulnerable, with storm drains and ditches likely to clog with debris.
Drivers along US-70, NM-48, and local roads near Ruidoso should prepare for rapidly changing water levels and possible road closures. Residents are urged to move to higher ground if water rises and avoid walking or driving across flooded areas. Those in flood-prone neighborhoods should keep devices charged, monitor local alerts, and have emergency kits ready.
With flood risk lasting through tonight, additional warnings or road closures are possible. Stay tuned for the latest advisories.
