Albuquerque, NM – Heavy rains and the risk of flash flooding will impact central New Mexico on Monday afternoon, prompting a Flood Watch for the South Central Mountains. The National Weather Service warns that between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., up to 2 inches of rain could fall per hour, creating the potential for rapid and dangerous runoff.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest rainfall is expected to develop as showers and thunderstorms move slowly north and northeast across the area. The flash flood risk will be heightened due to the presence of burn scars, particularly around the Ruidoso area, which remains vulnerable to excessive runoff.
Travelers and residents in low-lying areas and along rivers, creeks, and streams are urged to be cautious. The storm may cause flooding of roads, particularly in the mountainous regions where creeks and streams could quickly rise. Local officials advise staying away from riverbanks and culverts, which could become unstable during periods of intense rainfall.
If you live in or near affected areas, monitor weather updates closely. Flash Flood Warnings may be issued, and residents should be ready to take immediate action if conditions worsen.
The Flood Watch will remain in effect through Monday evening, with the possibility of further alerts if conditions change.
