RUIDOSO, N.M. – Heavy rainfall Sunday is raising a dangerous flash flood threat for communities in the northern Sacramento Mountains, with Ruidoso burn scar areas at the highest risk. Officials warn that rapid flooding and debris flows could block roads and endanger lives through tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Even a half inch of rain falling quickly on burn scars left by recent wildfires could trigger flash flooding along the Rio Ruidoso, Cedar Creek, and Brady Canyon.

Local officials urge residents and visitors to have a plan to reach higher ground quickly if warnings are issued. Debris flows may damage structures, block roadways, and cut off access to neighborhoods. Drivers are strongly advised not to attempt crossing flooded roads.

Thunderstorms in the area are expected to remain slow-moving and erratic, which increases the chance of rainfall piling up in a short period of time. Residents should keep devices charged and enable weather alerts to stay informed as conditions develop.

The Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday, but additional advisories could be issued if storms linger into the overnight hours.
