Albuquerque, N.M. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms could bring dangerous flash flooding across central and northern New Mexico on Friday, with the National Weather Service placing Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, and surrounding areas under a Flood Watch.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, multiple rounds of storms are expected Friday afternoon into the night, with rainfall totals of up to 2 inches possible. Locally heavier downpours may deliver 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour, raising the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, creeks, and rivers.
The Flood Watch covers the Albuquerque metro, the Rio Grande Valley, the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and as far north as Los Alamos. Storms may linger into the late evening, particularly over the middle Rio Grande Valley and northern mountains. Officials warn that excessive runoff could flood roads and overwhelm drainage systems.
Residents are urged to avoid travel through flooded streets and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Emergency managers caution that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday evening, with additional advisories possible if rainfall intensifies.
