Ruidoso, N.M. – Heavy rain moving into New Mexico’s South Central Mountains Friday afternoon could trigger flash flooding, especially in burn scar areas near Ruidoso.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, slow-moving thunderstorms are expected to develop over the Sacramento Mountains Friday, producing rainfall rates between 1 and 2 inches per hour. The storms are likely to concentrate just east of Ruidoso but may drift westward, heightening the risk of dangerous flooding on vulnerable burn scars.
Flooding could impact rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas across Lincoln County, where emergency officials urge residents to avoid arroyos and watch for rapid water rises. Runoff near burn scars can quickly overwhelm drainage channels, making road closures and property damage possible.
Residents are advised to stay alert for Flash Flood Warnings and avoid driving across flooded roads. Charging phones, keeping emergency supplies ready, and monitoring local alerts are recommended precautions ahead of Friday’s storms.
The Flood Watch remains in effect Friday afternoon through Friday evening, with additional advisories possible if storms persist into the weekend.
