Albuquerque, NM – Strong winds and low humidity are creating critical fire weather conditions across New Mexico, with a Red Flag Warning in effect for eastern parts of the state today. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque has also issued a Fire Weather Watch for the Sandia and Manzano Mountains and eastern New Mexico through Saturday.

According to the NWS, wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, particularly in areas east of the northern mountains. Coupled with relative humidity as low as 6%, these conditions significantly increase the risk of rapid fire spread. The agency warns residents to avoid outdoor burning and exercise extreme caution with any open flames.

Breezy conditions will persist through Saturday, with widespread wind impacts expected across most of New Mexico. Areas such as Santa Fe, Clovis, Raton, and Roswell will experience the highest fire danger due to strong gusts and critically dry air.

Officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid any activities that could spark a fire, and stay updated on the latest weather alerts. Fire weather warnings and watches may be extended if conditions persist.
