Albuquerque, NM — Gusty winds and dangerously low humidity levels have prompted a Red Flag Warning across much of central and northeast New Mexico until 8 p.m. MDT Saturday, with fire conditions expected to worsen again Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a strengthening system over the central Rockies is generating southwest winds between 20 and 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. These winds, combined with humidity levels between 9 and 15 percent and extremely dry fuels, create a high risk for rapid fire spread.

The warning impacts areas east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, along and east of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, and through the West Central Basin and Range. Communities from Gallup to Clines Corners and the Central Highlands, including Zone 125, are urged to avoid all outdoor burning activities.

Officials warn that fire conditions will briefly ease overnight but are expected to return Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m., particularly across the Central Highlands. Residents should secure loose items, avoid open flames, and stay updated on fire alerts.

Travelers along I-40 and residents in rural fire-prone zones should remain alert and ready to act quickly in case of fire activity.
