Albuquerque, NM — A heightened fire weather threat will persist across New Mexico on Monday as a Red Flag Warning takes effect from 2 to 8 p.m., impacting the Northeast Highlands, West Central Mountains, Upper Rio Grande Valley, and Lower Chama River Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, southwest winds between 20 and 30 mph—with gusts up to 45 mph—combined with humidity as low as 10%, will create critical fire conditions. A Fire Weather Watch will follow Tuesday afternoon through evening across eastern and central New Mexico, with wind gusts potentially reaching 65 mph.
Monday’s Red Flag Warning targets fire weather zones 105, 121, and 123, where low humidity and dry fuels significantly elevate the risk. Conditions will be most dangerous during peak wind periods in the afternoon.
Officials warn that any outdoor burning could rapidly spread and should be avoided. Fire crews and agencies have been notified and remain on alert.
Residents are advised to secure loose items, avoid any open flame or spark-generating equipment, and stay informed through official weather alerts. The state’s fire weather threat is expected to ease by Wednesday as winds weaken and humidity levels rise.
