Las Cruces, NM – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for southern New Mexico on Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. MST, as strong winds and low humidity create critical fire weather conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a dry and windy weather system will push through the region, bringing west-southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Combined with minimum relative humidity levels of 10 to 15 percent, the fire risk will be extremely high.

The warning covers Fire Weather Zones 111 and 112, including the Southwest Deserts, Lowlands, and the Rio Grande Valley. The highest fire danger is expected west of the Rio Grande after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire Safety Measures & Precautions

• Avoid outdoor burning and activities that could spark fires.

• Secure loose objects that could be carried by strong winds.

• Monitor local fire updates and alerts.

Fires that develop under these conditions will spread rapidly, making suppression efforts difficult. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and follow safety recommendations.
