Albuquerque, NM – Residents across New Mexico are bracing for an arctic cold front expected to bring dangerously low temperatures and snowfall starting Saturday. Officials warn of subfreezing conditions, wind chills below zero, and hazardous travel along major routes like I-40.

According to the National Weather Service, the first wave of cold air will arrive early Saturday, dropping daytime highs to the low 40s and overnight lows to 10°F in some areas. Wind gusts between 15 and 25 mph will make it feel even colder. Snow accumulation could reach 3 to 6 inches near the Colorado border, with lighter amounts spreading south into Albuquerque by Sunday.

Forecasters predict a second wave of frigid air on Monday, keeping temperatures well below freezing through midweek. Residents are urged to protect plants, pipes, and pets from freezing conditions. Hypothermia and frostbite risks will remain high for those outside for extended periods.

Drivers should prepare for icy roads and reduced visibility, especially in higher elevations and eastern New Mexico. Blowing snow may cause hazardous conditions, particularly along I-40 and I-25. Officials recommend keeping emergency kits, including blankets and flashlights, in vehicles.

The five-day forecast shows gradual improvement by Tuesday, with highs in the 40s and partly sunny skies. However, cold nights will persist, with lows in the teens.
