Albuquerque, NM – An extreme cold warning remains in effect across central and northeast New Mexico until 11 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero in some areas.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that dangerously cold conditions will affect multiple regions, including the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Raton Pass, and Union County. Residents in areas such as the Upper Rio Grande Valley, Santa Fe, and Johnson and Bartlett Mesas should prepare for frostbite risks on exposed skin within 30 minutes.

Precautions are crucial to prevent hypothermia and frostbite. The NWS advises dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and ensuring pets remain indoors or in sheltered areas with food and water. Portable heaters should be used safely, and grills or generators must not be operated indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.

The extreme cold follows a night of plunging temperatures across the state, which are unusual for mid-January. Travel could also be impacted by icy conditions in certain areas, particularly through Raton Pass.

Residents should monitor updates from local authorities and take extra care when venturing outdoors until temperatures rise later today.
