Whites City, NM – Two small earthquakes were recorded Tuesday evening south of Whites City, New Mexico, according to the Texas Seismological Network (TexNet).
The first quake, a magnitude 2.7, occurred around 5:11 p.m. MDT (23:11 UTC) roughly 57 kilometers south of Whites City at a shallow depth of 3.8 kilometers. Less than 25 minutes later, a second magnitude 2.5 quake struck approximately 60 kilometers south of Whites City, at a depth of 4.0 kilometers, occurring at 5:34 p.m. MDT (23:34 UTC).
According to TexNet data, both events were relatively minor and are unlikely to have caused damage. No felt reports had been submitted as of Tuesday evening. The quakes were located near the Texas–New Mexico border region, an area that has experienced occasional low-magnitude seismic activity in recent years.
While earthquakes below magnitude 3.0 are rarely felt, scientists often monitor such clusters for patterns that could indicate stress changes in local fault systems.
Residents in southern New Mexico and nearby West Texas are encouraged to report any shaking experiences through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” portal to assist in seismic research.
