Trout Valley, NM – A mild earthquake struck southwestern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, with light shaking reported near Trout Valley.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake measured 2.9 magnitude and occurred at 1:07 p.m. local time (MDT) on September 27, 2025. The earthquake was centered about 13 kilometers northeast of Trout Valley in Catron County, at a depth of 13.4 kilometers.
The USGS did not receive immediate reports of damage or injuries. Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor, though residents closest to the epicenter may have felt brief vibrations.
This region of New Mexico experiences occasional small earthquakes due to natural seismic activity along faults beneath the state. While larger quakes are rare, the USGS continues to monitor the area for aftershocks or additional activity.
