Artesia, NM – A dangerous dust storm is sweeping across southeastern New Mexico, creating hazardous driving conditions with near-zero visibility and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Dust Storm Warnings for Eddy, Dona Ana, and Otero counties, effective until 3 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the NWS in Midland, blowing dust has forced traffic to a stop along US Highway 82 between Artesia and Hope. A separate warning from the NWS El Paso office covers areas along Interstates 10 and 25, as well as Highways 54 and 70.

Officials warn that reduced visibility poses a life-threatening risk for motorists, particularly near Brantley Lake State Park, Seven Rivers, and along US Highway 285. Cities impacted include Artesia, Mesilla, and Hatch.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions if caught in the storm. The NWS advises motorists to pull off the road, turn off their lights, and keep their foot off the brake.

Conditions are expected to improve later in the afternoon as winds subside. However, travelers should stay updated on local weather alerts and exercise caution on roadways.
