Albuquerque, NM – Residents across New Mexico are preparing for a prolonged period of dangerously cold temperatures and snow as arctic cold fronts sweep into the region this weekend and early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the first cold front is expected to arrive in eastern New Mexico late Friday into Saturday, followed by a second surge of frigid air on Monday. Temperatures are forecast to remain sub-freezing, with wind chills creating a significant risk of frostbite and hypothermia, especially in northeastern parts of the state.

Light snow will accompany the cold fronts, with northeastern New Mexico expected to see snowfall beginning Friday night. Snow could spread further south and east Saturday night, with additional accumulation possible late Sunday into Monday. Forecasters predict total snowfall of 2 to 5 inches in some areas, with lesser amounts elsewhere.

Officials urge residents to take precautions for the extreme cold, including protecting people, pets, plants, and pipes. The public is advised to monitor updated forecasts through the National Weather Service and local news outlets. For road conditions, dial 511 or visit nmroads.com.
